Summary

Germany’s primary private-sector electronic identity option is the Online-Ausweis function on national ID cards, electronic residence permits, and EU/EEA eID cards, which is eIDAS-notified at the high assurance level and recognized under German anti-money-laundering law for identity verification. Users authenticate by reading their card via NFC and entering a PIN in AusweisApp, while businesses can access only certificate-authorized data such as name, date of birth, address, nationality, age confirmation, or a pseudonym, not a portrait or ID number. Although 42% of Germans reportedly have the service ready to use and 25% actively use it, businesses must provide document-based alternatives for minors, people without suitable cards, PINs or NFC devices, and many foreign customers. Germany’s planned state EUDI Wallet, d-you, is expected to launch in early 2027 but remains subject to pending legislation, while EU rules require member states to offer a wallet by December 2026 and may require certain regulated services to accept wallets by December 2027. BundID is limited to public-service login, Smart-eID was discontinued, and the cited provider currently supports German document, NFC, liveness, and AML screening workflows rather than the Online-Ausweis itself.
