Summary

Freja eID is a Swedish app-based electronic identity service operated independently of banks by Freja eID Group, with 1.773 million users as of June 2026 and particular relevance for people without Swedish bank relationships, recent arrivals, and some non-residents. Users authenticate by approving requests in the app with a PIN or biometrics, while businesses can integrate directly or through certified brokers to receive signed authentication results and, at higher account tiers, identity attributes such as name, personal identity number, date of birth, address, email, and phone number. Freja+ is listed at Swedish trust level 3 and, when obtained through an in-person agent check, is recognized under the EU-notified Swedish eID scheme at the Substantial assurance level; a separate level-3 option exists for non-residents. The text advises businesses to offer Freja alongside BankID, which has much broader domestic coverage, select tiers appropriate to their verification needs, confirm attributes and commercial terms with providers, and retain document-based verification as a fallback. It also notes that eID use can support Swedish AML and regulated-sector identity requirements, although due diligence remains risk-based, while future EU rules will expand acceptance of substantial- and high-assurance eIDs and certain requirements to accept the EUDI Wallet.
