European electronic identities are national systems that enable people to prove their identity online through cards, mobile apps, or bank-issued credentials, with more than 30 schemes from 26 EU and EEA countries notified under eIDAS at low, substantial, or high assurance levels as of October 2026. Notification supports cross-border use through national eIDAS nodes but does not require private companies to accept national eIDs, while widely used systems such as Smart-ID, Finnish bank IDs, Bank iD, Cl@ve, and iDIN may be unnotified despite broad adoption. Private-sector access varies substantially: bank- and operator-issued schemes are generally available through contracts with providers or brokers, whereas state systems such as the Netherlands’ DigiD and Spain’s Cl@ve may be restricted to public or legally defined uses. The EUDI Wallet is intended to supplement rather than replace national eIDs, with Member States required to offer a wallet by December 2026 and certain regulated private companies required to accept it upon request from December 2027. For identity verification and anti-money-laundering processes, the guide recommends combining country-specific eIDs with document verification as a fallback, noting that EU AML rules from July 2027 will recognize substantial- or high-assurance eIDs, subject to applicable national requirements and evolving standards.
