Under eIDAS 2, every EU Member State must provide at least one free, voluntary, certified European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet by 24 December 2026, a deadline calculated from the entry into force of initial wallet implementing acts on 24 December 2024. From 24 December 2027, private-sector relying parties other than micro and small enterprises must accept the wallet at a user’s request when they are legally or contractually required to use strong online authentication, while very large online platforms have a related obligation without a separately stated deadline. Wallet use remains optional for individuals, requiring services to retain alternative identification routes. Relying-party registration rules also apply from December 2026, and technical standards support signed, minimal-data identity presentations through protocols such as OpenID4VP and ISO/IEC 18013-7. The Anti-Money Laundering Regulation, applicable from 10 July 2027, permits customer verification through eID at substantial or high assurance, including the high-assurance EUDI Wallet. A mandatory wallet portrait and registration-certificate authentication are scheduled from 11 August 2028, while national deployment progress varies and some countries may miss the 2026 target.
