Summary

Sweden’s eID landscape is dominated by BankID, a bank-issued digital identity used by 8.7 million people in 2025 and held by nearly all registered adults, while Freja eID serves as the principal alternative with about 1.77 million users as of June 2026. Both BankID and agent-verified Freja+ participate in Sweden’s eIDAS-notified scheme at the Substantial assurance level, making them relevant for identity verification in areas such as anti-money-laundering compliance, payments, gambling, and age checks, although additional screening and risk controls may still be required. Sweden will introduce the police-issued SverigeID on 1 December 2026 as a complementary state eID, initially focused on public-sector use, while EU rules will require member states to offer an EUDI Wallet by late 2026 and require many regulated private services to accept wallets by December 2027. Businesses are advised to prioritize BankID for customers with Swedish personal identity numbers, support Freja and eligible foreign eIDs where appropriate, and provide document verification with chip reading, liveness detection, and face matching for users without Swedish eID credentials.
