France has no single national electronic identity system: FranceConnect is a widely used state login federation but provides only low assurance and cannot satisfy anti-money-laundering (AML) remote identity requirements, while FranceConnect+ supports the notified France Identité scheme at high assurance and La Poste’s digital identity at substantial assurance. Private companies may access these services only when legislation requires them to verify users’ identities, making FranceConnect+ particularly relevant to regulated sectors such as banking, payments, and crypto, while document verification remains necessary for foreign residents, minors, and users without compatible French credentials. French AML rules permit remote verification through substantial- or high-assurance eID systems or, where unavailable, combined alternatives such as ANSSI-certified remote document-verification services. France Identité, which uses an NFC-enabled French identity card and app-based authentication, exceeded five million users in October 2026, whereas FranceConnect had about 45 million users but retains low-assurance status regardless of the provider selected. France must provide an EU Digital Identity Wallet by December 2026, and certain private services requiring strong authentication will need to accept it at users’ request by December 2027. For online age verification, French rules for adult-content sites emphasize privacy-preserving “double-anonymity” methods and allow facial age estimation with a fallback option.
