Summary

ID Austria is Austria’s national electronic identity system, replacing Handy-Signatur in 2023 and serving nearly 6.3 million registrations by September 2026. Its fully verified Vollfunktion version is notified under eIDAS at the High assurance level and is recognized across the EU, while the Basic function used by some migrated accounts lacks EU-wide recognition until an in-person identity check is completed. Businesses can use ID Austria for remote customer identification under Austrian anti-money-laundering rules, with additional EU AML rules applying from July 2027, and private providers can connect through OpenID Connect or SAML after registration and, where necessary, attribute accreditation. Standard data includes name, date of birth, and a sector-specific identifier, while address, nationality, photograph, and age flags require the full level and additional authorization. Organizations are advised to retain document-based verification for users under 14, non-residents, and basic-level account holders, while also addressing phishing risks involving fake renewal messages. Austria had not announced an EUDI Wallet launch date as of October 2026, although EU rules require member states to provide a wallet by December 2026 and regulated private entities to accept it by December 2027.
