Summary

Spain’s DNI electrónico (DNIe) is the country’s chip-enabled national identity card and its only eIDAS-notified electronic identity scheme, certified at the High assurance level since 2018. Available only to Spanish nationals, it contains qualified electronic certificates that allow users to authenticate or sign with a PIN, while DNI 3.0 and 4.0 cards can also be read by phones through NFC; older cards require contact readers. Under Spain’s anti-money-laundering law, a qualified DNIe signature can establish identity for remote onboarding without requiring a copy of the identity document, whereas NFC document verification generally combines chip data with liveness and facial matching. Businesses must validate certificate status, distinguish between card and certificate validity, and maintain alternative document-based processes for foreigners, users without active certificates or PINs, and other unsupported cases. From July 2027, the EU Anti-Money Laundering Regulation will recognize eID systems at substantial or high assurance levels as a customer-verification route, making the DNIe relevant across EU compliance processes, although businesses remain responsible for their risk assessments, screening, and onboarding decisions.
