The United Kingdom has no national digital ID scheme after the government cancelled its planned program in July 2026, while GOV.UK One Login continues as a central-government-only sign-in and identity-verification service with 23 million users, and the GOV.UK Wallet remains unavailable for public download despite planned credential rollouts. Private businesses cannot use One Login and instead may rely on certified digital verification providers operating under the UK’s statutory trust framework, overseen by the Office for Digital Identities and Attributes, or conduct their own compliant document checks. Since February 2026, certified registered services can satisfy the identity-verification component of anti-money-laundering due diligence, although firms must still meet other customer due-diligence requirements. Digital identity services also have limited applications in right-to-work and right-to-rent checks, age assurance, and alcohol sales, with eligibility and verification methods varying by use case. The UK is outside the EU’s eIDAS framework and its future EUDI Wallet system, so UK schemes are not EU-notified, while businesses serving international users may need separate routes for EU national eIDs, eVisa share codes, or document-based verification.
