Summary

DigiD is the Dutch government’s digital login system for citizens, operated by Logius, and is generally unavailable to private companies because connection requires a statutory public task, authorization to process the citizen service number (BSN), and use of DigiD for that task. Notified under eIDAS at Substantial and High assurance levels, DigiD recorded 645 million uses in 2025 and supports higher-assurance authentication through its app and NFC checks of Dutch identity documents. Businesses logging in to government services use eHerkenning instead, while private firms seeking to verify Dutch customers must typically use alternatives such as iDIN, which is transitioning to itsme, or document verification involving NFC chip reading, liveness detection, and face matching. Although DigiD’s assurance levels can meet Dutch anti-money-laundering reliability standards, most regulated private entities cannot access it, making alternative eIDs and document-based fallbacks necessary, especially for customers without Dutch eID credentials. The developing NL Wallet and EU Digital Identity Wallet framework may expand options, with certain regulated private relying parties expected to accept EU wallets at users’ request from December 2027.
