DID Wallet Interoperability: The Future of Digital Credentials

DID wallet interoperability is crucial for realizing the full potential of self-sovereign identity (SSI), which allows individuals to control their digital credentials through Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) and Verifiable Credentials (VCs). Currently, the landscape is fragmented due to varying support from numerous wallet providers, leading to a siloed ecosystem where credentials from one wallet may not be recognized by another. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is working on standards like the Verifiable Credentials Data Model and DID Core specification to establish a common language for digital credentials, but consistent implementation is necessary for seamless interoperability. Communication protocols such as DIDComm v2, OpenID Connect for VCs, and Aries are emerging to facilitate secure interactions between DIDs, although challenges like the absence of a universal VC presentation service and managing revocation lists persist. Didit is addressing these challenges by promoting universal VC acceptance, supporting multiple protocols, ensuring revocation management, and employing privacy-preserving technologies like Zero-Knowledge Proofs, aiming to bridge the gap between SSI and traditional identity management.
