Summary

Belgium’s two eIDAS-notified electronic identification schemes at the High assurance level are the national eID card, including foreigner eCards, and itsme, which reported more than eight million Belgian users by the end of 2025. Belgian anti-money-laundering rules explicitly permit eIDAS identification methods and the eID card, subject to a business’s own reliability analysis, while EU AML rules applying from July 2027 recognize substantial- or high-assurance eID as a verification option. Smart-ID has been assessed at High assurance in Belgium but is not EU-notified, and MyGov.be provides a government authentication option without EU notification. Businesses are advised to select methods according to risk and needed data attributes, use document chip reading, liveness, and face matching as a fallback, and consider additional checks for remotely used eID cards because they lack visual verification. The EUDI Wallet must be available from EU member states by December 2026, and certain regulated private services will need to accept it on request by December 2027. The source also describes Didit’s Smart-ID integration and document-verification services, noting that itsme and EUDI Wallet support are planned rather than currently live.
