BankID is Norway’s widely used electronic identity and signing system, operated by Stø AS and available to businesses through resellers rather than a public price list, so costs for authentication, signing, and data scopes depend on individual contracts. It supports BankID High, which uses a one-time code and password, and a biometric mobile method; both are associated with a high eIDAS-notified scheme, though the biometric method has a lower internal assurance classification and may require step-up to BankID High for anti-money-laundering onboarding. Businesses can integrate through OpenID Connect and typically receive a user’s name and date of birth, while identity numbers are limited to cases where the business already holds them and address data is not provided by default. BankID serves millions of users and thousands of services, but coverage gaps among younger people, non-residents, and those without required bank relationships mean businesses may need document-based identity verification as an alternative. The report also notes ongoing Norwegian regulatory scrutiny of BankID’s high-assurance status, although no published decision concerning Stø had been issued as of 5 October 2026.
