Automated Retrieval Standards (ARS) describe an emerging approach to data interoperability that enables organizations to retrieve only necessary information directly from its source rather than transferring and storing entire datasets, thereby reducing exposure of personally identifiable information. The approach aims to address security, privacy, scalability, and operational challenges associated with manual data exchanges, inconsistent formats, and complex integrations, while supporting compliance with regulations such as GDPR and CCPA through data minimization, transparency, and user consent. ARS relies on standardized APIs and formats alongside technologies including verifiable credentials, zero-knowledge proofs, decentralized identifiers, and secure multi-party computation to authenticate claims and preserve privacy. Using employment verification as an example, ARS could allow a financial institution to confirm employment directly with an employer without collecting sensitive pay stubs. Didit says it is incorporating ARS principles into its identity-verification platform through compatible protocols, secure access APIs, privacy technologies, consent-management tools, and compliance support, complemented by its existing government-validated verification and fraud-detection capabilities.
