Autonomous System Number (ASN) lookup links an IP address to the network operator responsible for its address range, providing a more stable source of context than IP reputation alone for fraud prevention. Lookup services use Border Gateway Protocol routing data to identify an IP’s ASN and related details such as its owner, location, and address ranges, often through APIs that support real-time analysis. Fraud teams can use ASN data to identify traffic from networks associated with malware, botnets, phishing, proxy or VPN services, Tor exit nodes, suspicious peering relationships, or newly registered networks, while geographic inconsistencies between a user’s claimed location and network origin may also warrant scrutiny. Used alongside device fingerprinting, behavioral signals, and transaction history, ASN information can support risk scoring, step-up authentication, automated blocking, and manual review, improving detection accuracy while helping reduce false positives.
