Belgium’s itsme app can support age verification by sharing either a user’s date of birth or minimum-age flags for ages 13, 16, 18, 21, and 30 after approval in the app, allowing businesses to verify eligibility without collecting unnecessary identity data. The Belgian eID Scheme FAS/itsme is notified under eIDAS at the High assurance level, and itsme reports more than eight million Belgian users and availability to users aged 13 and older since late 2025. The material notes that no verified Belgian rule requires age-gated businesses to use itsme specifically, while gambling reportedly has a 21-year minimum age and EU Digital Services Act guidance favors privacy-preserving, multi-method age assurance over self-declaration alone. It recommends alternatives for people without itsme, including Belgian identity-card document verification with face matching and Smart-ID, and proposes a layered approach that uses estimation where appropriate before escalating borderline or higher-risk cases to stronger verification. It also discusses itsme’s 2026 expansion to the Netherlands, forthcoming EU age-verification and digital-wallet initiatives, and Didit’s current offerings for Smart-ID, document checks, and age estimation while itsme integration remains planned.
