Voice Agent API Just Leveled Up: GPT-5 + GPT-OSS-20B
Blog post from Deepgram
Deepgram has added OpenAI’s GPT-5 family and the open-weight GPT-OSS-20B to its Voice Agent API and Playground, allowing developers to test, compare, and deploy models for real-time voice applications. GPT-5 is offered in full, mini, and nano versions, with trade-offs among reasoning depth, context retention, speed, latency, and cost; the full model targets complex conversations, while mini is positioned for general production use and nano for low-latency, budget-sensitive workloads. GPT-OSS-20B, hosted through Groq, provides a customizable and transparent alternative suited to developers who need open weights, self-hosting possibilities, or domain-specific tuning. The Playground supports side-by-side evaluation using consistent voice scenarios and metrics such as reasoning quality, long-conversation accuracy, response latency, token cost, and error recovery, enabling teams to select a model based on their application requirements before deploying it through the Deepgram Console.
