The Tests that Tricked GPT-4o
Blog post from Deepgram
OpenAI’s GPT-4o, with “o” denoting its omnichannel design, expands the model’s native handling of text, images, files, and audio while reducing response latency and improving web browsing, translation, and real-time voice interactions. The release also introduced a Mac application for Apple Silicon devices and made GPT-4o available to free users with usage limits, though some app features require a ChatGPT Plus subscription. Its expressive voice output drew attention, including controversy over a voice perceived as similar to Scarlett Johansson’s role in *Her*, which OpenAI later removed. Tests described in the article found that GPT-4o could identify Waldo in a detailed image and successfully generate a functional JavaScript version of Flappy Bird, but it struggled with precise spatial coordinates, crowd counting, geometric visualization, and initially counting letters in a simple word. These results suggest that GPT-4o offers substantial improvements in multimodal interaction and coding while retaining limitations in reliable visual reasoning, spatial understanding, and basic symbolic tasks.
