Playing With P5.js: Implementing Game Logic
Blog post from Deepgram
This second installment in a three-part P5.js creative-coding series explains core game-development techniques using the Canvas API wrapper, building on prior drawing and input concepts. It demonstrates collision detection through coordinate comparisons for rectangular objects and distance calculations for circular ones, including ways to keep keyboard-controlled players within canvas boundaries. The tutorial then introduces JavaScript classes and arrays to manage multiple game entities, using a Bubble class whose instances move smoothly with Perlin noise and maintain independent properties such as position, radius, and interaction state. By combining collision checks with global scoring and conditional rendering, it shows how to create collectible objects, prevent repeated score increases, and implement a simple win state that replaces gameplay with a victory message. The final part of the series is planned to add voice functionality through Deepgram.
