Summary

Diffusion-based world models are emerging as systems that generate interactive, playable virtual environments rather than passive videos, with Google DeepMind’s Genie demonstrating that action-responsive worlds can be learned from gameplay footage alone. DIAMOND advances this approach by training diffusion models to predict future game screens and rewards from past observations and player actions, then training reinforcement-learning agents within these generated Atari and experimental Counter-Strike environments. Framed as a partially observable Markov decision process, DIAMOND combines a U-Net diffusion network for visual state prediction, a separate reward predictor, and an actor-critic agent trained through REINFORCE, using a cycle of collecting real gameplay data, fitting the world model, and learning policies in simulated environments. The project is designed to be relatively accessible, with pretrained interactive models for 25 Atari games and reported training on a consumer RTX 4090 GPU. Although current generated worlds can lose visual coherence, especially in complex 3D scenes, later systems such as OASIS, Genie 2, and GameNGen indicate rapid progress toward longer-lasting, more consistent, and more general interactive simulations, with potential uses in game creation and AI-agent training.
