Inside dbt v2: how a rebuilt SQL engine makes linting up to 250x faster
Blog post from dbt
dbt v2 introduces a rebuilt Rust-based SQL and Jinja engine that gives dbt semantic understanding of code, enabling faster local development tools, static analysis, and project-state management. Its new VS Code and command-line linter provides inline diagnostics, automatic fixes, and dbt-specific rules while operating 40 to 250 times faster than standard SQLFluff by avoiding warehouse introspection queries. The release also adds native dbt checks backed by a project-generated information schema queried through DuckDB, redesigned browser-based documentation with column-level lineage, live production data comparisons in VS Code, and experimental local DuckDB unit tests for Snowflake and BigQuery projects. Additional optimizations combine certain not-null and uniqueness tests into single scans, reducing compute costs and execution time, while dbt Labs also highlighted private betas for dbt State and Lake Compute.
