How Sweetwater catches broken dbt pipelines before anyone notices, with Datadog
Blog post from dbt
Sweetwater Sound’s analytics engineering team described how it built proactive observability for its dbt-based data platform using Datadog while modernizing a previously fragmented reporting environment. After rapid growth left the company with thousands of Domo reports, duplicated transformations, and limited governance, Sweetwater migrated 26 departments to a governed dbt stack between 2023 and 2025, ultimately creating a project with more than 11,000 column descriptions. As the data team became more integrated with IT, it adopted Datadog because other teams already used it to monitor source systems, enabling shared visibility across the organization. Datadog helped the team investigate an intermittent sales-channel attribution issue by tracing abnormal Kafka transaction activity to a wrongly scheduled legacy script, and it also supported warehouse compute management as the team’s DAG and batch-processing needs expanded. Sweetwater now uses automated schema and database monitors, adaptive row-count and freshness checks, tailored alert routing, recovery messages, machine-learning thresholds, and manual annotations, while planning to extend monitoring into lineage, queries, terminal and AI-assisted workflows, and CI/CD-based impact analysis and data profiling.
