How PetScreening turned a dbt pipeline into a pet tag factory
Blog post from dbt
PetScreening described at dbt Summit 2026 how it transformed FIDO Alert’s pet-tag fulfillment process from a slow, error-prone outsourced workflow into an in-house manufacturing operation powered by dbt. FIDO Alert, which serves 1.6 million users and 2.2 million pets through QR-coded tags and local lost-pet alerts, now prints more than 1,000 tags daily across two machines after evolving through three storefront and data-source architectures. Using a modular medallion-style dbt pipeline allowed the team to replace changing data inputs without disrupting production, while tests for uniqueness, non-null values, and custom business rules help prevent duplicate or failed tag prints that would waste physical materials and postage. A single gold-level model supports both the printing machines and growth-team dashboards, creating a shared source of truth and enabling a five-person data team to manage more than 1,000 dbt models, improve data freshness by 32 times, and reduce the time from request to actionable answer by over 90%. The company is next developing a semantic layer intended to support AI agents in querying, monitoring, and debugging its documented operational data pipelines.
