Summary

Figma developed “consistency checkers,” dbt singular tests integrated with scheduled execution, alerting, task tracking, and investigation tools, to detect product and data problems that traditional unit tests may miss. Initially created during a high-stakes billing-system transition affecting more than 500,000 paid plans and 5 million paid users, the checks helped identify several serious discrepancies that could have delayed the remodel or IPO. Dagster runs the tests against Snowflake, while PagerDuty, Slack, Asana, Linear, and Hex help teams alert, investigate, track, and resolve failures. Figma now operates more than 450 checkers across 15 business and product areas, including its AI credit system, finding over 100 genuine code and data issues per month. Although early checks produced a 67 percent false-positive rate, validation against later data syncs, AI-assisted SQL refinement, and broader approved data access reduced it to 33 percent. Figma distinguishes these business- and product-facing checks from routine dbt DAG tests and assigns primary ownership to software engineers, with data scientists supporting complex SQL work.
