Summary

At dbt Summit 2026, DuckDB co-founder Hannes Mühleisen explained that dbt v2’s built-in DuckDB adapter enables fully local, offline analytics workflows without warehouse infrastructure, authentication, or compute charges. Configuring the integration requires only a DuckDB file path in a dbt profile, while omitting the path creates an in-memory database for testing. Mühleisen positioned DuckDB as an analytics-focused alternative between spreadsheets and distributed systems, arguing that typical warehouse query sizes can often be handled by a single laptop. He highlighted DuckDB’s ability to query CSV, Parquet, and Iceberg files directly, along with SQL features including GROUP BY ALL, UNION BY NAME, PIVOT, and summarize. During an offline demonstration, he used dbt and local DuckDB to process approximately 10 gigabytes of compressed Wikipedia page-view data, including aggregations across roughly 300 million rows, in about three seconds. He also previewed DuckDB 2.0, expected around October 2026, with a new SQL parser, semi-structured variant type, and the Quark client-server protocol.
