Running Durable Workflows from Postgres UDFs
Blog post from DBOS
DBOS has released a PostgreSQL workflows client that lets applications enqueue durable workflows and send workflow messages directly through SQL functions, extending workflow integration across Postgres features such as triggers, scheduled tasks, foreign data wrappers, and transactions. A key use case is triggering exactly one workflow for each newly inserted database row, while another is atomically enqueuing a workflow alongside related database updates through a transactional outbox pattern. The client uses user-defined functions to validate arguments, convert workflow inputs to JSON, and insert workflow records into a workflow status table, from which servers can dequeue and execute them. A related function inserts messages into a notifications table, enabling workflows to later consume messages by workflow ID and topic.
