Building Durable Agents with DBOS and Databricks
Blog post from DBOS
DBOS announced a partnership with Databricks and an integration with Databricks Lakebase intended to improve the reliability, reproducibility, and observability of AI agents. The collaboration addresses the nondeterministic behavior of LLM-based agents, which can produce faulty SQL, choose incorrect tools, or generate misleading analyses and can be difficult to debug after lengthy workflows. DBOS is an open-source, database-backed durable execution library that runs atop Lakebase or other PostgreSQL databases, checkpointing workflow progress, LLM calls, and tool invocations so agents can recover from crashes or transient failures without duplicating work. These checkpoints also provide a detailed execution record that developers can inspect to identify the prompts, context, and inputs preceding problematic behavior. Developers can fork workflows from a chosen checkpoint, preserving earlier results while rerunning only the affected step with revised prompts or tools, reducing both debugging time and token costs. DBOS can be added to Databricks-hosted applications by connecting the library to Lakebase and annotating agent entry points and tool calls as durable workflows and steps.
