Bridging Languages with Postgres and Workflows
Blog post from DBOS
DBOS describes a way for applications written in different languages, such as a TypeScript web server and a Python document-processing pipeline, to coordinate durable workflows through a shared PostgreSQL database rather than relying on a separate message broker or RPC service. Its workflow libraries use a common database schema, allowing clients to enqueue workflows, check their status, and retrieve outputs by reading and writing shared workflow records. Cross-language interoperability requires a common serialization method because native formats such as Python pickle and TypeScript SuperJSON are not mutually compatible, so portable workflows use a restricted JSON-based format for externally shared inputs, outputs, notifications, and messages. Internal workflow step data can still use each language’s native serialization, preserving flexibility while enabling Postgres to act as a language-neutral control plane with built-in durability, transactions, and concurrency control.
