The cloud development industry has been around for over a decade and a half, with various companies offering a range of products and services. Recently, the term "Cloud Development Environment" (CDE) has gained traction, but it is considered problematic as it implies that all development environments will eventually be 100% cloud-based, which is not the case. The author argues that there will always be space for both local and cloud-based development environments, and proposes using the term "Development Environment Management" (DEM) instead, which better captures the essence of the product they deliver. DEM encompasses the process of creating and managing development environments, including provisioning, configuring, automating, and ensuring consistency across teams and projects. The author believes that this term is more accurate and encompassing, and proposes adopting it to represent their industry.
