Roche: Transforming patent workflows with agentic AI

Roche has transformed its patent law analysis through the adoption of Dataiku's Universal AI Platform, addressing the inefficiencies of traditional legal research methods and enhancing the quality of insights in case law analysis. Initially, patent attorneys at Roche faced the challenge of exhaustive, manual research processes that were time-consuming and often incomplete, leading to increased costs and slower responses. In 2021, Roche began leveraging Dataiku to integrate Generative AI (GenAI) into their workflow, starting with pilot projects like AskWhitebook, which facilitated more intuitive semantic searches and full-text analysis. This evolution led to the development of Themis PatAI, an agentic AI interface that consolidates multiple specialized AI projects into a single, unified workspace, significantly reducing the time to build new projects and saving substantial costs in attorney hours and consultancy fees. The platform's user-friendly, low-code environment allowed non-technical users to build workflows without IT bottlenecks, improving productivity by enabling attorneys to focus on strategic tasks over manual data processing. Roche plans to expand Themis PatAI's capabilities globally, integrating it further with research and development to enhance knowledge management and streamline patent landscapes, ultimately aiming to foster seamless collaboration between attorneys and AI in their future operations.
