Monitor the performance of critical steps in user journeys with RUM operations
Blog post from Datadog
Datadog Real User Monitoring Operations Monitoring enables teams to measure the reliability and performance of application-controlled technical steps, such as processing payments or authenticating users, separately from broader user journeys. Teams can define operations through RUM SDK APIs, the Datadog UI, MCP Server workflows, or the RUM Operations API, specifying clear start, success, failure, and timeout conditions to produce meaningful availability and latency metrics. Datadog groups operations in a central catalog, generates metrics from ingested RUM traffic, and supports retention and exploration of sessions involving failed or slow operations. Separate availability and latency SLOs help distinguish failures from performance issues, while the preview Bits Investigation for Operations feature analyzes related frontend, backend, network, error, session, and trace data to identify likely causes of degradations. Operations can also be explicitly linked to Journey Monitoring, allowing teams to connect critical technical steps to end-to-end workflows while retaining independent monitoring even when journey traffic is low.
