VAPOR PANDA Uses AI-Driven ARTEX to Scale a Global Espionage Campaign
Blog post from Crowdstrike
CrowdStrike reports that VAPOR PANDA, a China-linked threat actor, used the ARTEX agentic framework with DeepSeek and another commercial large language model to conduct parallel intrusions against more than 200 organizations across at least 14 countries beginning in October 2026. Targets included foreign ministries, government agencies, telecommunications providers, and U.S. pharmaceutical, semiconductor, defense, nuclear, financial, and think tank organizations. ARTEX coordinated planning and worker agents while a human operator issued Chinese-language instructions, enabling simultaneous exploitation, reconnaissance, credential theft, lateral movement, web-shell deployment, and identification of systems lacking endpoint protection. Confirmed compromises at nine organizations included deployment of the BLOODALCHEMY backdoor, which used a renamed legitimate binary and malicious DLL loader. The activity, distinct from previously reported Storm-0940 ARTEX operations, illustrates how agentic AI systems and commercially available models can expand the scale and speed of established espionage tradecraft. Recommended mitigations include rotating exposed credentials and keys, enforcing SAML validation and IMDSv2, patching internet-facing systems, hunting for ARTEX indicators, and deploying endpoint detection coverage throughout organizational environments.
