Master the 17 AG-UI Event Types for Building Agents the Right Way
Blog post from CopilotKit
The Agent-User Interaction Protocol (AG-UI) is an event-based protocol designed to standardize real-time communication between AI agents and user-facing applications, enabling seamless integration and synchronization through a stream of JSON events. Using WebSockets, SSE, or HTTP, AG-UI facilitates a consistent exchange of messages, tool calls, state updates, and lifecycle signals between agent backends and frontends, allowing UIs to stay in sync with agents' progress without the need for custom integration efforts. The protocol categorizes events into five main types—Lifecycle, Text Message, Tool Call, State Management, and Special Events—each serving specific roles in communication, from tracking agent runs and streaming text messages to managing state synchronizations and handling application-specific interactions. By providing a common vocabulary of events, AG-UI decouples UI logic from agent logic, enabling any compliant agent to interact with any AG-UI-aware frontend, thus enhancing the development of scalable and predictable interactive agent applications.
