Should You Still Learn to Code? A Convex Engineer's POV

Convex infrastructure engineer Jordan describes moving from Harvey Mudd through internships at Facebook, Asana, and Netflix before joining the then-20-person startup for greater ownership and hands-on learning. At Convex, Jordan worked on customer lifecycle emails, designed a transaction-log cleanup system that reduced database storage by more than 50%, and contributed to Conductor, a multi-tenant architecture that lets multiple customer deployments share machines and infrastructure resources. Jordan also helped build Chef, an AI app-building project intended to demonstrate how Convex’s integrated, end-to-end type-safe platform can give coding models clearer correctness feedback, and improved the authoring tools, APIs, templates, and documentation for reusable Convex components. Reflecting on AI-assisted development, Jordan argues that these tools are most effective when engineers already understand the work well enough to assess and direct their output, while foundational coding knowledge, system design intuition, experimentation, and human accountability remain important for solving complex cross-system problems and building durable software.
