Summary

Context.dev developed Rusteerio, a Rust-based drop-in replacement for the JavaScript HTML parsing library Cheerio, to reduce processing overhead in its web scraping pipeline while retaining Cheerio’s familiar API and behavior. Built with assistance from LLMs in under a day for roughly $1,000, Rusteerio moves parsing, DOM selection, mutation, and serialization into Rust while maintaining compatibility with Cheerio 1.2.0, passing all 777 upstream tests without modified fixtures or skips. Benchmarks excluding network fetching showed Rusteerio processing 3,000 Common Crawl pages at 364 pages per second versus Cheerio’s 92, while a full 5,000-page processing pipeline involving metadata extraction, DOM traversal, content removal, text extraction, and HTML serialization completed in 10.2 seconds rather than 22.5 seconds, a 2.22-fold improvement with matching output. Rusteerio 2.0.0 is being released as open-source MIT-licensed software with benchmarks and compatibility tests, prebuilt binaries for macOS, Linux, and Windows, and support for Node.js 20.19 or newer.
