Rethinking PR triage from first principles
Blog post from CodeRabbit
CodeRabbit Triage is designed to help teams manage growing pull request volumes by distinguishing between what a PR needs next, who is responsible, and how urgently it deserves attention. It uses deterministic rules rather than AI to classify workflow states such as needing review, author updates, decisions, or being blocked, with rule order ensuring that human judgment and specific reviewer feedback take precedence over mechanical issues like merge conflicts. Priority is calculated separately from workflow using verifiable signals including validated finding severity, linked issue urgency, and dependency impact, while unreviewed PRs may remain P3 because no evidence yet supports a higher score. A repository-level model provides comparative ranking, review-depth recommendations, and explanations, but cannot alter workflow states or priority scoring. Personalized queues use ownership, waiting time, activity, and pressure to determine attention order, while human approval remains required for actions such as requesting reviews or sending notifications. The interface supports grouping, subgrouping, filtering, and saved views to help users organize PRs by workflow, author, repository, priority, and review guidance. Positioned within CodeRabbit’s broader Agentic Change Management approach, Triage aims to preserve human accountability by clearly explaining why a PR needs attention, what action is required, and the evidence supporting that recommendation.
