How we built our AI code review agent for IDEs

CodeRabbit has launched a free VS Code extension that integrates AI-powered code reviews directly within the coding environment, aiming to streamline the development process by providing real-time feedback and minimizing the need for context-switching. This extension addresses developers' needs for pre-pull request (PR) IDE reviews to catch errors before they escalate, reducing the iterative back-and-forth typical at the PR stage. Developing the extension required restructuring the code review pipeline to deliver near-instantaneous feedback while maintaining quality, despite the challenge of providing valuable insights in real-time. The IDE reviews focus on catching critical issues like logical errors and specification mismatches, offering a leaner process compared to the more comprehensive PR reviews. Enhancements included optimizing prompt and model orchestration, refining user interface design for better integration within the editor, and allowing developers to resolve issues using their preferred AI coding assistants. Future plans include user-level learnings, additional tools, enhanced context features, and more detailed codebase awareness to further improve the utility and precision of the IDE reviews.
