The DBA in 2028: from cluster operator to estate architect
Blog post from Cockroach Labs
Growing database estates, driven by unpredictable AI workloads, multi-tenant SaaS requirements, and increased FinOps scrutiny, are making traditional DBA practices centered on managing individual clusters increasingly difficult to scale. The text argues that DBAs should shift toward an “estate architect” role, using policies to encode decisions about cost, compliance, resource limits, retention, performance, and approval requirements while preserving human expertise for unusual incidents and failures. It presents cluster virtualization as a way to support this model by allowing host clusters and workspaces to establish governance boundaries while teams provision isolated virtual clusters that automatically inherit applicable policies. Cockroach Continuum’s Cluster Virtualization, described as enabling this approach, is available in public preview.
