Cloudsmith expands support to Nix
Blog post from Cloudsmith
Cloudsmith now offers Early Access support for public and private Nix binary caches, allowing Nix and NixOS teams to use existing nix copy and nix build workflows without additional tooling. Nix evaluates and hashes build inputs into derivations and store paths, then retrieves trusted prebuilt artifacts from binary caches when available or builds them locally when they are not. Cloudsmith can proxy individual Nix release channels by fetching requested packages from configured upstreams, caching them for later use, and helping maintain availability during outages of public caches such as cache.nixos.org. It also serves as a private cache for internally produced builds, reducing the operational burden of self-hosting with tools such as nix-serve or S3. Cloudsmith signs package narinfo metadata with repository ED25519 keys on each read, enabling Nix verification, immediate key rotation, and simultaneous use of multiple keys. Setup involves configuring a Cloudsmith repository as a substituter, trusting its public key, optionally adding upstream channels, using entitlement tokens for private access, and pushing local builds with nix copy. The integration brings Nix artifacts under Cloudsmith’s centralized access controls, audit logs, and multi-format software supply-chain management features.
