Agent skills are the newest software supply chain dependency
Blog post from Cloudsmith
AI agent skills are bundles of instructions, scripts, and reference files that extend an agent’s capabilities but can also inherit its access to repositories, APIs, production data, and other sensitive resources. As skills are increasingly created and shared by developers and non-developers through Git repositories, public catalogs, registries, and local workstations, organizations may lack visibility into which skills agents use, who approved them, and what dependencies they install. Public registries such as ClawHub have already seen documented malicious skills that sometimes bypassed automated scanning, illustrating risks including data leakage, harmful commands, and unreviewed package installation. The text argues that organizations should treat skills as software dependencies, applying artifact-registry controls that provide version pinning, policy enforcement, access management, scanning, and audit logs. It recommends first governing packages installed by agents and then routing skills themselves through the same controlled registry to balance security oversight with teams’ need to develop and use skills efficiently.
