Network performance update: Speed Week 2023

In this post, Onur Karaagaoglu shares updates on network performance improvements by Cloudflare. They have been analyzing their own and other networks' performance to identify areas for enhancement. Since July 2022, they started taking a closer look at specific networks needing improvement, resulting in significant progress. As of May 31, 2023, Cloudflare is now the fastest provider for 46% of networks, up from 33%. Their tooling and processes involve Real User Measurements (RUM), analyzing performance metrics like TCP Connection Time and Time to First Byte, as well as their Performance Benchmarks Dashboard. They actively monitor and work on improving these metrics, using three categories of actions: establishing peering, expanding compute capacity, and applying traffic engineering. Their goal is to constantly optimize their infrastructure and become the fastest provider everywhere.
