We rebuilt Cloudflare's developer documentation - here's what we learned

Cloudflare recently updated its developers' documentation website (developers.cloudflare.com) by migrating from Gatsby to Hugo, a faster static site generator built using Go. The transition also involved converging multiple Workers Sites into a single Cloudflare Pages instance. This change brought improvements in developer experience, performance, and quality of life for engineers, technical writers, and product managers at Cloudflare. The new engine allows all Cloudflare products' documentation to be developed, built, and deployed using the same core foundation. The migration involved converting 1600 markdown pages from MDX to a standard Markdown variant that Hugo can interpret. This change also allowed for automation of the entire process, reducing manual work and time taken. The new HTML-first static site has significantly improved performance metrics like First Contentful Paint, enhancing user experience and SEO ranking.
