Unifying Workers AI and AI Gateway into a single AI control plane
Blog post from Cloudflare
Cloudflare is converging AI Gateway and Workers AI into a unified platform that lets developers access Cloudflare-hosted and external AI models through shared Workers bindings and REST API endpoints, with centralized observability, security, logging, and billing. Users can route Workers AI requests through an automatically created default gateway to receive request and response logging, token tracking, latency and error metrics, and cost attribution without prior dashboard configuration, while named gateways remain available for customized routing and caching. AI Gateway credits can now pay for Workers AI as well as third-party providers, with unified prepaid billing and elevated Workers AI rate limits for users of this path. Cloudflare also plans model-first routing, which would select among vetted providers hosting a requested model to provide transparent load balancing and failover while honoring requirements such as zero data retention, followed by smart routing that classifies tasks and chooses suitable models automatically for performance and cost efficiency.
