Total eclipse of the Internet: traffic impacts in Iceland, Spain, and Portugal

Cloudflare Radar data showed that the August 12 solar eclipse across Europe coincided with sharp, precisely timed declines in HTTP traffic as people paused online activity to watch the event. Comparing five-minute traffic intervals with the median traffic levels from the prior three Wednesdays, the analysis found that decreases generally peaked around maximum solar obscuration and were largest in locations along or near the path of totality, including Iceland, Spain, and Portugal, where declines ranged as high as roughly 15% to 30% or more in some measurements. Countries experiencing shallower eclipses, such as Sweden, Denmark, Poland, and Switzerland, saw limited changes, while Norway and Sweden recorded slight increases above baseline at times. The findings account for geographic variation, local conditions, and normal daily traffic patterns, but the close alignment between eclipse timing, obscuration depth, and traffic troughs indicates that the shared celestial event was the main cause of the temporary reduction in Internet activity.
