Summary

Cloudflare has released an experimental public preview enabling Rust applications built for the Emscripten wasm32-unknown-emscripten target to run on Workers through enhanced wasm-bindgen support, improving compatibility with native Rust libraries and Tokio-based applications. Developed through collaboration among Google, Cloudflare, Emscripten, wasm-bindgen, and Tokio contributors, the integration allows Emscripten and wasm-bindgen to coexist through a new configuration that supports Rust–JavaScript and C++–Rust interoperability. Cloudflare also added experimental approaches for integrating Tokio with JavaScript event loops, either through WebAssembly JavaScript Promise Integration or a proposed cooperative LocalEventLoop runtime that lets the host drive Tokio without blocking. More than 40 Emscripten contributions introduced a Node-compatible raw sockets layer supporting epoll, TCP, UDP, and Unix sockets, which Workers can provide through its Node.js compatibility APIs. As a demonstration, Cloudflare ran the Rust-based Pumpkin Minecraft server in a single-threaded Durable Object, adapting its threaded workloads into asynchronous tasks, persisting its files in Durable Object SQLite storage, and accepting multiplayer connections through Workers TCP ingress.
