Summary

Cloudflare has introduced Access for Workers, allowing organizations to enforce authentication directly on individual Workers or across an entire account so applications, previews, and deployments remain private by default. Unlike earlier hostname-based policies, Worker-level protection automatically applies to all associated custom domains, routes, workers.dev subdomains, and preview URLs, while organizations can choose to secure previews, production traffic, or both and exempt specific public Workers when needed. Access integrates with existing identity providers, email or group restrictions, and service tokens, and provides authenticated user details such as email, name, and groups to Worker code through ctx.access.getIdentity(), removing the need for developers to validate JWTs manually. Local development can simulate authenticated identities through Wrangler configuration, while Workers for Platforms can protect all tenant deployments by applying Access to a dispatch Worker. Cloudflare says the feature was enabled by its Rust-based FL2 proxy architecture, which allowed routing to occur before Access authentication, and it is now available to all users.
