Unlike traditional human-centered payment systems, x402 enables digital services to directly transact using a framework that leverages HTTP 402 response codes, previously underutilized due to a lack of standardization. The protocol aims to streamline payments for various use cases, from purchasing goods through digital assistants to enabling AI agents to pay per service session. The introduction of a deferred payment scheme further enhances x402 by allowing delayed settlements and aggregated payments, accommodating both traditional payment methods and stablecoins. Cloudflare is integrating x402 into its Agents SDK and MCP servers, with a live demo available in the x402 playground, showcasing the protocol's capabilities in real-world applications. The ongoing development with Coinbase seeks to establish x402 as a recognized standard, inviting contributions from the broader community to refine and expand the protocol's use.
