Summary

Cloudflare, VoidZero, and Max Schwenk of Owner.com are collaborating with the TypeScript team on tsrs, an experimental Rust port of the TypeScript compiler being incubated within the Oxc toolchain. The project aims to remain fully compatible with upstream TypeScript rather than fork its language design, while improving speed, memory efficiency, and portability to environments such as WebAssembly, browsers, embedded devices, and Cloudflare Workers. Early benchmarks indicate tsrs can be up to eight times faster and use about 70% less memory than TypeScript 7.0 under comparable configurations, while some improvements have also been contributed to TypeScript’s Go-based implementation. The collaborators plan to merge tsrs with Theo Browne’s tsc-rs, maintain compatibility through automated upstream tracking, testing, and agent-assisted fixes, and eventually integrate the compiler into tools such as Oxlint for type-aware linting.
