Introducing the Billable Usage API: programmatic cost visibility for Cloudflare

Cloudflare has introduced a new Billable Usage API to enhance transparency in monitoring cloud expenses, catering to the needs of automation and programmatic usage tracking. This API provides a detailed breakdown of account usage and cost by product and service period for every usage-based Cloudflare service, including Workers, R2, D1, and more, allowing users to integrate this data with FinOps tools seamlessly. It aligns with the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS) to ensure familiarity for teams already using these standards, even though full conformance is still in progress. Cloudflare has partnered with Vantage, an infrastructure cost management platform, to integrate Cloudflare's cost data into a single view alongside other cloud providers, facilitating cross-provider allocation, anomaly detection, and cost management via FinOps agents. The API aims to provide real-time cost visibility, enabling finance teams and developers to efficiently track, forecast, and manage cloud expenses programmatically, with future improvements planned for finer-grained time windows and enterprise coverage.
