Summary

Cloudflare has introduced Forge, an open-source, Apache 2.0-licensed and pluggable generation pipeline for producing SDKs, CLIs, documentation, libraries, and other API-consumption tools from specifications such as OpenAPI. Built to manage Cloudflare’s API ecosystem of more than 3,500 operations across hundreds of repositories, Forge runs in CI to lint API changes and create per-pull-request preview builds, helping teams identify generation problems before releases. Its chained transformer architecture allows outputs such as TypeScript SDKs to serve as inputs for other outputs, including the cf CLI, Cap’n Web RPC specifications, documentation, MCP servers, validation schemas, and potentially bindings for tools like TanStack Query. Cloudflare says this flexibility also supports handwritten CLI functionality and associated documentation, while enabling future support for formats including AsyncAPI, GraphQL, Protobuf, and Cap’n Proto. Forge already generates requirements for the cf CLI and is expected to expand to Cloudflare’s API documentation and SDKs, while also supporting the company’s effort to introduce API versioning without breaking existing users and clients.
